Building & Services Design

Complete building design for processing facilities - structural steelwork, pre-cast concrete panels, cold rooms, effluent management and all mechanical and electrical services.

A Building Designed Around the Process

A meat processing facility is not a standard industrial shed. The building has to accommodate overhead rail systems, significant drainage falls, cold room interfaces, effluent management, high-pressure washdown environments and food safety hygiene separation requirements - all while meeting structural, planning and environmental regulations.

When building design is handled separately from process design, the result is almost always compromise - drainage that doesn't quite work, structural elements that conflict with equipment, cold rooms positioned for convenience rather than workflow, services that serve the building rather than the process. These problems are expensive to fix after construction and often impossible to fix without significant rework.

Meatlink Engineering designs the building and the process together. Our building and services design is developed in parallel with the process layout - so the structure serves the operation, not the other way around.

Through our associated company Industrial & Commercial Resource Group, we have direct capability in pre-cast concrete panel construction - a system that suits meat processing facilities particularly well for its hygienic, durable wall surfaces and construction speed. Whether your project suits structural steel, pre-cast panels or a combination of both, we have the capability to design and deliver it.

What's Involved

An integrated building and services design process that puts the processing operation first.

  1. 01

    Building Form & Structure

Designing the structural system - structural steel, pre-cast concrete panels or a combination - suited to your site, span requirements and processing environment. We select the structural approach based on what genuinely suits the facility, not on a default preference.

  2. 02

    Cold Room & Refrigeration Layout

Locating chiller, freezer and holding rooms within the building footprint and coordinating refrigeration services requirements. Cold room placement drives workflow, energy efficiency and compliance - it's one of the most consequential decisions in a processing facility layout.

  3. 03

    Effluent & Drainage Design

Designing the drainage, effluent treatment and waste handling systems to meet environmental and regulatory requirements for your processing volume and species. Effluent systems are frequently underestimated in scope and cost - we design them correctly from the start to avoid costly remediation later.

  4. 04

    Mechanical & Electrical Services

Coordinating water, compressed air, electrical supply and lighting to processing areas, consistent with food safety and hygiene requirements. Services are positioned to serve the processing layout - not distributed generically and then adapted to the process as an afterthought.

  5. 05

    Documentation Package

Producing a complete building and services documentation package suitable for council submission, construction and services installation. All disciplines are coordinated into a single package - no gaps between documents, no conflicts between drawings.

Why Integrated Building Design Matters

Building and process design that work together - not separately - deliver a facility that performs from the first day of operation.

Integrated Design

Building structure, process equipment and services are designed together - not independently - reducing coordination problems during construction. When all disciplines share the same design intent from the start, the result is a facility that goes together cleanly on site.

Compliant Effluent Systems

Our effluent designs are prepared to meet current environmental regulations for your jurisdiction and processing volume. Effluent compliance is a condition of operating licence - getting it right in design is far less costly than retrofitting a system that doesn't meet requirements.

Services Coordinated to Process

Mechanical and electrical services are positioned to serve the actual processing layout - not generically distributed across the building. Every outlet, drain and supply point is where the operation needs it - not where it was easiest to put it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about our building and services design service.

Do you work with pre-cast concrete panel construction?

Yes. Through our associated company Industrial & Commercial Resource Group, we have extensive experience with pre-cast concrete panel construction for processing facilities - including design, manufacture and erection.

Can you design for both chilled and ambient processing areas in the same building?

Yes. We regularly design facilities with mixed-temperature zones, and ensure appropriate hygiene separation, drainage falls and services distribution across all zones.

What effluent treatment systems do you design for?

We design for DAF (dissolved air flotation), anaerobic treatment, evaporation ponds and trade waste pre-treatment systems, depending on site constraints, processing volume and local environmental requirements.
